WHAT’S A PODIATRIST?
May 2006 is foot health awareness month so what better time to talk about the podiatrist. Unfortunately podiatry is not a very well known profession here in Cyprus and until recently there were very few of us here on the island. However things are now changing and we are growing in number and even managed to form our own society two years ago. (The Cyprus Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists) Most people know that the podiatrist deals with the feet but they often don’t realise quite how wide the scope of practice is. Below is a brief summary;
1. GENERAL CLINICS; podiatrists assess, evaluate and provide Footcare for a whole range of patients from the young to the old. Many patients have long-standing problems for which there is no cure so the podiatrist plays an important part in keeping these people comfortable and mobile. 2. BIOMECHANICS; biomechanics is concerned with the preservation, restoration and development of the function of the foot and its associated structure. Many biomechanical problems are treated with orthotics which the podiatrist has the knowledge and skill to produce. 3. HIGH RISK PATIENTS; these people have an underlying illness or condition that puts their legs and feet at a higher risk of injury and disability. This includes people with conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy, peripheral arterial disease and peripheral nerve damage amongst some others. Podiatrists can assess and treat these people, giving them advice to reduce long term and sometimes serious problems that can result. 4. NAIL SURGERY; Podiatrists are qualified to administer local anaesthetics and carry out nail surgery.
Podiatrists will also treat and give advice on foot problems such as corns .callous, chilblains, ingrowing toe nails, verrucae etc.
At the moment in Cyprus, podiatrists can only be found in the private sector. A list of names can be obtained from our society ;( www.podiatrists-chiropodists.com ) .Any of our members will be pleased to help you even if it’s only to give some advice on general Footcare.
