Special Olympics World Summer Games
This year the Special Olympics World
Summer Games were held in Athens in June. Several of the Society’s
members took part in the Special Olympics as volunteers for the Fit
Feet program. The time spent in Athens was a truly amazing
experience as we had the chance to assess, examine and refer the
athletes if necessary. 2097 athletes were screened in total during
the Special Olympics. The athletes that took part in the Special
Olympics were screened for any type of foot problem and were given
information on general foot care and referred for further
examination if that was deemed necessary. Most of the athletes
screened had nail and skin abnormalities or gait abnormalities. Some
of the problems were identified for the first time during the
screening. Advice was given to their coaches so that the problems
could be addressed properly, therefore the athletes can get the best
outcome from the screening. Working with the Special Olympics
athletes was inspiring and we hope to have the chance to participate
in more activities such as this.
